It is so very important to remember what happened on 9/11. I had a history teacher when I was in high school that told us that the reason we should learn history is so that we don’t repeat it. As time goes on, and new generations are born, there will be more and more people who don’t remember 9/11 or who weren’t born yet when it happened. I believe books like this are so important. The stories told by people who were there, like this one. This book reminded me of how very bad it was. I watched it happen live on tv that day. I remember how afraid we were and uncertain of what might be attacked next even after all the planes had been grounded. I remember the feeling of that day. The sadness and fear. That day and what those people went through and continue to go through should never be forgotten. The author tells what he witnessed as he worked at Fresh Kills landfill during the aftermath of 9/11. I don’t know how he and the other workers did it. I can’t imagine seeing the things they saw. When he told about ‘Fire Truck Row’ I cried. So many firefighters died that day. He also tells how so many of the first responders have gotten sick with cancer after being told the air was safe to breathe. Something should be done to help them and their families. There is also another excellent book written by another cop that also worked at Fresh Kills during the aftermath of 9/11 if anyone is interested in reading another book like this. It’s called ‘Running with the Bulls - the Road to Fresh Kills by Joseph Lani’. I read it a few years ago and it was also really good.
