I got hooked on his first one which introduced Dennis Milne. The Crime Trade was a breakthrough in that there were many subordinate stories going on. As usual, Kernick's characters were very well developed and felt very real. Interesting to me also are the bad boy bad girl romances and the good boy good girl romances. Essentially the former are gangsters and the letter are the police detectives. Kernick is brilliant at enrolling me in the criminals as well as the police detectives! I have no firsthand knowledge of the London and British criminal class but I must say reading Simon Kernick's novels I feel like I'm getting the real thing delivered very dramatically and well. His bad guys are really evil! His good guys, often including the police detectives, are not only good but wonderfully human.
