Engaging stories from Maple's career as a detective forthe NY Transit Police, deputy commissioner of NYPD, andconsultant to Newark, Philadelphia, and New Orleans policedepartments make this a very interesting read. The factthat the problems and solutions discussed are relevant toother cities - not just NYC - broadens the appeal of thisbook. While some of the principles will apply to smallerpolice jurisdictions, the context of all examples is withlarge cities. The subtitle "How You Can Make Your Community Crime-Free"is a bit misleading, as this book is really about how thepolice can make your community crime-free. Deployingresources based on analysis of crime tracking, holdingcommanders accountable for reducing crime in theirdistricts, auditing against falsifying crime reportsto artificially improve statistics, having "cold casesquads" take over unsolved cases, interrogation strategy, rooting out bad cops, and respect for citizens areamong the many topics covered.I chose to read this book because the author, Jack Maple, was an interesting character in the book Turnaround byWilliam Bratton; Bratton shook up several underperformingpolice departments including the NYPD and Maple was keyplayer on his "dream team."
